Love Without Lovers
In this series I wanted to explore how objects can be imbued, even charged with emotion and reflect the psychological dynamics of relationship through empty chairs.
It was my intention to use the most basic elements to suggest complex and nuanced aspects of relationship.
Painted during covid, I started on a whim, with a single painting which turned into an entire series. I almost see each painting in the series as a chapter in a long novel which is understood in the context of the entire body of work.
These paintings are different from much of my work as they are meant to be immediate, direct, pared down and fundamental. It was as if I were trying to reduce the dimensions of relationship to almost mathematical theorems, but visually, using the positions of the chairs in each piece to portray specific relational dynamics.
